What is food irradiation?

Irradiation is a technology that enhances the safety of food by reducing or eliminating foodborne illnesses like Salmonella and E. coli. It extends the shelf life of products by destroying or inactivating spoilage-causing organisms. The FDA has evaluated the safety of irradiated food for over 30 years  and has found the process to be safe.
